Why aren't buildings surrounded by a safety net in case you have to jump out of a window due to fire?

Update : How about killing birds and feeding a hungry population???
Update 2: Er, 'trapping' birds and feeding a hungry population...

The cost to put them up, the cost to maintain them, it's dangerous having all that heavy netting floating around, mass die off of the bird population when they are caught up in the netting - all of which doesn't make sense given how very rarely someone has to jump out a window to escape. There's a reason for safety codes and clearly marked fire exits.

Because nets would trap birds and dust and dirt and look terrible fairly fast. Also, if you need to jump out a window to avoid being burned alive how will being caught in a net to watch the flames approach make you safer?

Cause safety nets would Trap Birds and kill them.

And it's more efficient to go down stairs and die instead of jumping out a window and die :2

Why aren't buildings made of fire-retardant marshmallows so no one can get hurt?

Because we don't want our cities to look like architectural fly traps. Maybe we should require mandatory BASE jumping
