In late December, nearly two million emails from Jeb Bush's two terms as governor of Florida were released following a public records request, and posted online. Jonathon Morgan crunched the numbers to find out what Floridians emailed their governor about — here were the most common topics:

Now, interest groups frequently urge their members to forward on form letters to politicians. But for this chart, Morgan actually tried to filter out messages with identical language, to focus instead on "emails that weren't solicited."
With that in mind, the Terri Schiavo controversy is easily the most common topic referenced, being mentioned in 35 percent of unsolicited emails sent to Bush during his administration, according to Morgan's tally.  Schiavo was a Florida woman who had been in a persistent vegetative state for over a decade, and whose husband and parents fought about whether her feeding tube should be removed. Governor Bush sided with the parents, and worked to keep Schiavo alive. Eventually, federal courts sided against him, and Schiavo died in March 2005.
It's worth keeping in mind that over the course of Bush's two terms, lasting from 1999 to 2007, adoption of email picked up dramatically, so it's perhaps not surprising that an issue that broke toward the end of his governorship dominated his email correspondence. And snail mail, of course, isn't accounted for here.

Abstract The method and system for automatically controlling a path of travel of a vehicle include engaging an automatic control system when the security of the onboard controls is jeopardized. Engagement may be automatic or manual from inside the vehicle or remotely via a communication link. Any onboard capability to supersede the automatic control system may then be disabled by disconnecting the onboard controls and/or providing uninterruptible power to the automatic control system via a path that does not include the onboard accessible power control element(s). The operation of the vehicle is then controlled via the processing element of the automatic control system. The control commands may be received from a remote location and/or from predetermined control commands that are stored onboard the vehicle.

Method and apparatus for altering a region in the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and/or magnetosphere

Abstract A method and apparatus for altering at least one selected region which normally exists above the earth's surface. The region is excited by electron cyclotron resonance heating to thereby increase its charged particle density. In one embodiment, circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation is transmitted upward in a direction substantially parallel to and along a field line which extends through the region of plasma to be altered. The radiation is transmitted at a frequency which excites electron cyclotron resonance to heat and accelerate the charged particles. This increase in energy can cause ionization of neutral particles which are then absorbed as part of the region thereby increasing the charged particle density of the region.

 This invention has a phenomenal variety of possible ramifications and potential future developments. As alluded to earlier, missile or aircraft destruction, deflection, or confusion could result, particularly when relativistic particles are employed. Also, large regions of the atmosphere could be lifted to an unexpectedly high altitude so that missiles encounter unexpected and unplanned drag forces with resultant destruction or deflection of same.

Weather modification is possible by, for example, altering upper atmosphere wind patterns or altering solar absorption patterns by constructing one or more plumes of atmospheric particles which will act as a lens or focusing device." (find on page 'weather')
